There is no better way to appreciate Kerry's romance and beauty than to leave the car and walk amongst it. The hills and lakes ring out the silence, the freshness of the air is felt and the magic of the ever-changing light observed. Wild deer cross the forest paths and examples of the unique Lusitanian flora and fauna can be found in every second hedgerow. History is palpable in fine castles and monasteries, pre-history in the standing stones and passage graves.

Damien Enright was born in Kerry. He is author of the critically acclaimed A Place Near Heaven - A Year in West Cork, and writer/presenter of RTE TV's Enright's Way a series on environment and heritage. Since 1990, he has written a weekly outdoor column in The Irish Examiner. His five walking guides of West Cork have been immensely popular; this is his second guide in a Kerry series.
